What is a Sump Pump?

The sump pump is one of the most important drainage fixtures in the common house hold. If you have any drains that cant be drained through gravity due to depth(like deep basements) then all the sewer or storm water will drain into a sump and then when the water accumulates, it will be pumped out to a drain located at a high depth and gravity will do its work from them to take the sewage and storm water to the city connection.

Sump pumps protect your house from flooding from sewage or storm water. If the pump were to fail and you had no way of knowing, the water in the sump will continue to accumulate and eventually overflow and cause water damage. It is imperative that you keep an eye on these systems and have them cleaned and inspected periodically to ensure they never have any issues.

Sump Pump Issues and Repairs

1. Plugged propellers: The most common issue with sump pumps is a jammed propeller. This is especially common with sewage sump pumps as they tend to get jammed up with feminine products, paper towel or any other substance that shouldn’t be sent down the drains.

Solution: Most of the time this is a fairly straight forward fix(depending on the pump system). It requires disassembling the sump pump, pulling it from the sump, cleaning it and un-jamming the propeller.

2. Float Switch: The second most common issue is malfunctioning float switches. Each sump pump as a float switch turns the pump on when the sump fills up to a certain depth. Once this depth has been reached, the float switch kicks on and the pump drains the sump. If this switch stops working it cant signal to the pump to turn on causing the sump to overflow.

Solution: This requires some diagnostic testing. Once the float switch is diagnosed and proven to be faulty, the pump will need to be pulled, the float switch will need to be removed and replaced with a new one
